How does dashboard work on a mac

I do not often use dictionaries, but one of the most useful widgets in Dashboard was Battery Monitor. It showed the battery charge in my Magic Trackpad. That information is very important, and all I had to do to use the widget was simply to bring up Dashboard.

Now that Dashboard and this highly useful widget are gone, I am looking for a substitute. What I find online is that I have to open System Preferences and navigate my way down to a particular preference.
