Thread starter dduelin Start date Sep 11, This is not meant to be a thread condemning Rotella diesel engine oils, my ST is no stranger to Rotella 15w40, but I wanted to highlight the fact that some Shell Rotella oils no longer carry API certification for gas engine use. They had API certs for both gas and diesel engines for many years but no longer. This is a very recent change in Rotella product labeling. From what I've read ZDDP is like the last resort of metal on metal protection, this makes it great on start-up, extended service, and high load.

I guess right now the only safe bet for the flat tappet guys is Mobil 1 V-twin motorcycle. The good news is that the oil companies are wise to the issue and apparently working on a solution.

If you want to boil your brain with oil learninins check out Charles Navarro's research. Diesel rated oil has more detergrent than gasoline type. I've read speculation it may be too much for flat tappet motors. The whole oil issue is making my head hurt.

Anybody know why you shouldn't use motorcycle oil in a car? Because life on this planet will cease to exist as we know it. At least that's what the other internet forums say.

Rover guys use it religiously. I know I used it on mine, with great results. Some claim the Zinc helps seals maintain their integrity. Wal-mart usually sells it for a good price too. I used it as my "cleanout" oil when I was first running my transplanted JDM engine Charles Navarro does a whole bunch of high end Porsche engine work to the point of developing his own ceramic lifters and all aluminum cylinders.

He's been testing all sorts of different oils for flat tapped air cooled motors. It provides hardworking protection at a lower viscosity than CK-4 oils. Use our locator to find an installer or retailer nearest you. We believe your hard work should be rewarded. Zink has not been removed from Shell Rotella motor oil. So we are good to go using Shell Rotella on our flat tappet engines.

It's not a matter that the Zinc was removed, but that the amount of Zinc has been reduced. Rotella is a very good oil as with the rest of the diesel grade motor oils on the market. It's a fiercely competitive market and nobody wants a bad rep. Phosphorus can blind over the catalytic reaction sites in the converter , making it less efficient in turning carbon monoxide CO into carbon dioxide CO2. Synthetics have a much better flow rate in cold weather than conventional engine oils , allowing critical moving parts to be better lubricated on start up.

This means the diesel fuel will prematurely ignite in the diesel engine , which can lead to engine damage. Gasoline contamination can also damage the fuel pump and mess up diesel injectors.

Gasoline engines cannot combust diesel fuel, so the car would stop running. Once that happens , it has to be towed to a shop, and the fuel system needs to be drained. We start by emptying the gas tank. And because the car won't actually run on diesel fuel, there's little risk of damaging the catalytic converter. First, the oil viscosity change won't cause your head gaskets to blow off. The real problem with using 15w40 in place of 5w30 is the increase thickness of 15w Obviously the heavier oil would be a good thing.
